During confession

There are many ways to celebrate the sacrament of confession. Below is a common rite.

After greeting, we make a sign of the cross:
IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER,
AND THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.
The priest says:
MAY THE LORD BE IN YOUR HEART
AND HELP YOU TO CONFESS YOUR SINS WITH TRUE SORROW.
A beautiful prayer to start with might be:
LORD, YOU KNOW ALL THINGS;
YOU KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU.
And we confess our sins …………
The priest gives advice and a
‘penance’ (often a short prayer).
We pray an act of contrition, e.g.:
LORD JESUS, SON OF GOD,
HAVE MERCY ON ME, A SINNER.
The priest gives the absolution:
… AND I ABSOLVE YOU FROM YOUR SINS,
IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF
THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
We answer with: AMEN.
Often the priest says a prayer afterward.
